Group charges organisations on fire prevention, safety training for workers
The National Fire Prevention Awareness and Advocacy (NFPAWA) has urged organisations to train workers on fire prevention and control as a larger component of their investment in fire safety and security.
In a statement made available to The Guardian, the Programme Director, Mrs. Antonia Beri reckoned that fire disasters were avoidable while blaming the past outbreaks in the country on poor control system and ignorance on the part of the affected.
She noted that the manufacturing sector is very vital to the success and survival of any economy, which makes it pertinent to think of methods of growing and developing the sector, rather than investing on disaster, which could have been avoided in proactive cautions.
“The manufacturing sector is indispensable to the general economy especially now that the fortune from the oil and gas sector had dwindled, thus, it is pertinent to think of growing and developing the thriving sector, rather than investing on disaster which could have been avoided in proactive cautions.”
“Failure to adjust would hinder development in the Africa, accompanied by multiple cases of loss of life, environmental damage, economic hardship and financial losses”, she said.
She further stated that the organisation was keen about growth and development of African economy, which is achievable through proper and conscious safety attitude.She advised that government should formulate right policies and as well be strict with enforcement of safety rules while ensuring that service providers possess the right qualifications and skills.
In his opinion, Director of Lagos Fire Service, Rasaq Fadipe reiterated that it is not just enough that organisations invest in security and safety, but ensure that workers and individuals be trained and knowledgeable on available provisions.
“Organization’s attitude to core safety had not been excellence, hence, delayed development and sustainability of resources in various sectors.Therefore, there is an urgent need to bridge the knowledge gap through training in corporate governance, capacity building, consultancy, standardization, advocacy and proffering of targeted solutions. These are necessary for compliance, regulation and business continuity”, he said.
