Bolarinde sheds light on mental illness in Solo art exhibition

Renowed artist, Olubukola Bolarinde, through a diverse range of media, predominantly acrylics and oils on canvas, created a 50-piece work of art that sought to amplify the role of emotional well-being and its profound impact on individuals and society.

The exhibition, themed, “The Absence of Melancholy,” was held in Lagos in partnership with HEREL, a real estate development firm.

On the inspiration behind the art, she stated that there are so many people depressed or currently fighting some sort of mental illness present in varying degrees and due to strong spiritual beliefs and culture, don’t speak up about such challenges or seek professional help.

She added: “I decided to use my art to spin off stories around what can lead to depression and you would read that on every piece. There is a unique story I have carved out of what each piece stand for.

“The background to all of this is melancholy, which is a depressed mood without a reason. Some people sometimes are sad, they don’t really know why but they can’t shake it off. I believe that happiness is a choice so I started painting this abstract, colourful and vibrant body of work, which is the total opposite of being in a melancholic state,” she added.

Head Business Development, HEREL, Olatade Daranijo, said the company partnered with the art exhibition because the art depicts an understanding of the importance of aesthetics, which is a key area of focus in HEREL.

He said the theme of the exhibition speaks volume, adding that as a real estate firm, they are of the opinion that the home should be a place of relaxation, recharging and rejuvenation.

Managing Director, HEREL, Olaposi Lawore, said, “The collaboration between art and real estate allowed us to highlight the significance of mental health while showcasing our exceptional properties. “Just as an artist pays attention to intricate details in their artwork, we, at HEREL, focus on the specific details of all our properties, ensuring the utmost quality and excellence.”
