The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) would organise nationwide in support of the National Assembly to grant autonomy to local government councils in the country.

The President of NULGE, Ibrahim Khaleel, who stated this in Abuja at the end of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the union, explained that the rally would speed up the works of the lawmaking body to grant both administrative and financial autonomy to local government councils.

He hinted that the union has the support of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to organize the rally adding that the time has come for Nigerians to do everything to support the National Assembly to grant autonomy to the local councils.

Khaleel hinted that rally also be used as an avenue to sensitize members of State Assemblies on the imperatives of local government autonomy.

His words: “The rally is one of the advocacy activities mapped out to ensure that the local government areas are financially and administratively autonomous in line with the global standard practice. One of the demands at the United Nations meeting was that the LGAs across the world be made to be autonomous in line with the democratic principles.”

He said the members of the unions have sanctioned advocacy rallies across the six geopolitical zones of the country at designated centres.

Khaleel mentioned the centres to include Calabar, Cross River State in the South-South; Enugu, Enugu State in the South East; Oshogbo, Osun state in South West; Ilorin, Kwara State in North Central; Jalingo, Taraba State in North East and North West zone.

He said the union at the state and local government levels will also conduct similar rallies while hinting that NULGE will collaborate with the National Assembly to ensure that local councils’ autonomy becomes a reality.
