A Former Ambassador to the Philippines, Dr Yemi Farounbi, has expressed concern over lack of commitment to operational standards across fields of human endeavours in Nigeria.

Farounbi, who spoke during the inauguration of Wells 83.9FM, Alaafin Avenue, Oluyole Extension, Ibadan, Oyo State, yesterday, said that even the presidential addresses being presented nowadays by the Nigerian government were low in standard when compared to what they used to be after Independence.

According to him, something serious should be done to reverse the trend.

The former envoy, while expressing optimism on the prospect of the new radio station, said: “In some other climes, it is not only the population that determines how many (radio) frequencies you grant. It is not the amount of political pressure you are able to exert. I have said over and over, and I will say it again that I advise the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to look at the system being used for allocating frequencies in the United Kingdom (UK) or Canada.”

According to Farounbi, unlike in the UK where the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is not allowed to source adverts, in Nigeria, the NTA and FRCN hustle for adverts at the expense of the privately-owned radio stations.

“Something ought to be done to support the capacity of private radio stations to survive, particularly at a moment like this when our economy is growing at 2.1 per cent.

In his address at the event, Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, DotunOyelade, lauded Lilian Bademosi for giving a rare shot at radio business as the first female founder in Oyo State.

Earlier, Bademosi said the radio station, which started as an online platform in 2017, resolved to make a difference in a bid to contribute to the growth and development of Oyo State.

Consultant with the radio station, Yomi Olasupo, said the advent of the new station in the city of Ibadan would bring a game-changing and refreshing experience to the listening public.
