All-new Land Rover Discovery debuts in Africa

‘May be the best technologically-inclined SUV yet’

The latest generation of Land Rover Discovery was yesterday unveiled in Pretoria, South Africa, with revamped features to explain the level of attention the British brand pays to details.

The all-new Discovery SUV, which comes with three-row, seven-seat, could remained the most technologically inclined SUV with unbeatable capability and versatility.

Put to test yesterday by The Guardian, the Discovery echoes the automaker’s take on building a model that boasts of capability and technology that enables cars do more with limited or no human assistance.

Distributed in Nigeria by Coscharis Motors, the new Land Rover Discovery proved the unstoppable spirit of adventure with its semi-autonomous safety technology and premium interior that offer family peace of mind and space.

The all-new Discovery received a dynamic appearance, which according to the company, represents a radical departure for Land Rover’s most versatile SUV, bringing on sophisticated surfaces and precisely engineered details designed to resonate with customers on an emotional level.

The fifth-generation model came with Land Rover’s strong, safe and light full-size SUV architecture, ingenious technology that keep users safe, connected and confident on all surfaces, all terrains and in all weathers.

Land Rover’s Chief Design Officer, Gerry McGovern, said: “All-New Discovery redefines the large SUV. Land Rover’s design and engineering teams have revolutionised the Discovery DNA to create a highly desirable, extremely versatile and hugely capable premium SUV. We truly believe the result is a radical departure in design that will introduce the Discovery family to a new, wider customer base.”

The new design has a more purposeful, stealth-like appearance inside and out, with features including a contrast roof, athletic front and rear bumper designs, luxurious leather upholstery and a sports-inspired steering wheel and pedals.

While only about 14 units of the Discovery first edition is expected to be sold in sub-Sahara Africa markets, only 2,400 examples would be available globally with exclusive features including unique etched map detailing on the aluminium trim for the doors and facia, unique badges, bold colour choices and a comprehensive list of standard equipment, the automaker said.

The optional Dynamic Design Pack gives All-New Discovery a more purposeful, stealth-like appearance both inside and out, with features including a contrast roof, athletic front and rear bumper designs, luxurious leather upholstery and a sports-inspired steering wheel and pedals setting it apart.

The vehicle, which Jaguar Land Rover described as the king of the hill is capable of towing 3,500kg capacity and debuted with lightweight aluminium construction that saves up to 480kg.

It has about 2,500-litres of luggage space and clever storage for 21st century family essentials, it offers up to nine USB ports and six 12-volt charging points and allows customers choose a range of premium materials including luxurious Windsor leather upholstery and natural oak veneers for interior.

It is equipped by Jaguar Land Rover’s efficient and powerful six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, all paired with a smooth and responsive ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Only the Land Rover’s advanced 250kW supercharged petrol 3.0-litre V6, the Si6, which provides 450Nm of torque to deliver relaxed performance and capability is expected in Nigeria.

Sub-Saharan Africa Sales Operational Director for Jaguar Land Rover, Nigel Clarke, said: The vehicle has started to do well in the markets where it has been launched in Africa. We are hopeful that it will be well received. Though economies of some African countries are experiencing tough time but we are very optimistic that the vehicle will do well in the market.”

Expected to arrive Nigeria later in year, Clarke was optimistic the machine would appeal to Nigerians, adding that the company’s five years warranty and services plan offered in partnership with Coscharis Motors address every spare-parts and repairs challenges.

He encouraged customers to buy approved specifications, stressing that the organisation continue received complaints from people, who import specifications that were not for the market.
