Delta governor, Okowa charges religious leaders to be fearless in preaching
Kumuyi lauds Nigeria’s democratic development
Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has charged religious leaders to be fearless in preaching the word of God to those in positions of authority.Okowa, accompanied by his wife, Edith and top government functionaries, stated this yesterday in Asaba during a special church service by the Deeper Life Bible Church.
He said: “At this very challenging time in our nation, it is time for Christians to speak out without fear and without seeking for any favour. It is time to say the truth to our leaders that we may in our various offices work with the fear of God.” He also said that it was important for those holding positions of authority to serve the people with the fear of God.
Meanwhile, the General Superintendent, Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor Williams Kumuyi, has urged Nigerians to look at the brighter side of the country and the Federal Government beyond oil for the country’s economic growth. He said there was hope for the country with the pace of the country’s democratic development.
He also lauded the state’s healthcare and youth empowerment programmes in the state.Speaking with journalists at the weekend at Benin Airport on the way to Delta State for a church programme, Kumuyi said: “We need to thank God in everything; that we got independence our that political leaders fought for 56 years ago. I think it is commendable and from that time till this time, maybe we are not where we should be but we are not where we used to be and we thank God that democracy is taking root and we are making progress. There are things to look into for us to become a better society but we are thanking God for what has happened already.”
The governor, while commending Kumuyi for his steadfastness in preaching the word of God, urged the church not to relent in praying for the state and the country.
He said: “This is the time we need more of your prayers for Nigeria and our state. We need God now more than ever before. The more knowledge of God we have, the better for us as a nation and state. The knowledge of God is needed in our homes.”
Okowa, who condemned gospel preachers for laying more emphasis on prosperity than preaching of the gospel, called on them to focus on the word of God, as it is the needed ingredient for national development.
He said many gospel preachers are confusing Nigerians with the emphasis on prosperity at the detriment of the word of God, saying the gospel should be given more prominence than the craze for material things and wealth.
He, therefore, assured Deltans of his administration’s commitment to selflessly serve them and with the fear of God.Kumuyi, who spoke on the theme of the service, “Redemption and Restoration,” said God would redeem His people and restore what they have lost if they turn to Him and genuinely repent from their evil ways.
According to him: “The government is not just folding its arms, it is doing something. We should be proactive and stop looking at the negative side or complaining of what has not been done but to move forward. We need to look at our economy and diversify so that we would not be depending on oil alone. We need to go into agriculture, tourism and other things that will generate resources and funds for the country.”
