To ensure that children derive maximum benefit from education, parents have been urged to ensure that their wards not only enroll and stay in approved schools, but also see to the completion of their studies.

This was the submission of the former board secretary of State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB), Olatunji Adefuye, during a community forum, which beamed the searchlight on the achievements of the School Board Management Committee (SBMC) under Amuwo Odofin Local Council Area of Lagos State.

Speaking on the theme, “Right of a Child to Education,” Adefuye said it was paramount to ensure that children are enrolled in schools because “the right is enshrined in the Child Rights Law, which recognises a child as any human being below the age of 18. By implication, all schoolchildren from primary one to senior secondary three are children, because by age they fall into this category.

Noting that education ensures children are equipped with skills and knowledge to be useful in the society, he said, “All children must be able to go to school because every child is entitled to receive compulsory basic education and have equal opportunity for higher education, depending on individual ability and thereby benefit from the same opportunity to build a future.”

He added that stakeholders in government should make basic education compulsory and free for all, take steps to encourage regular attendance at schools and increase retention rate so as to provide educational and vocational information to guide children in schools.
