FRSC, Guinness sue for reduction in alcohol-related accidents
• Kick off 2017 ember month’s safety campaign
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and Guinness Nigeria Plc have stressed the need for Nigeria to reduce alcohol related road crashes on Nigerian roads, especially during ‘ember’ months.
Flagging off a yearly campaign to create awareness against the habit of drinking and driving, the duo was optimistic that fatality on roads in Nigeria would reduce if people avoid alcohol when they need to drive.
Speaking at the ceremony in Lagos, Lagos Sector Commander, FRSC, Corps Commander, Hyginus Omeje, the said ultimate goal of ensuring reduction of alcohol related road traffic crash was feasible through the programme.
“Guinness and FRSC have forged a strong partnership designed to keep our roads safe. The major thrust of our partnership is to advise the motoring public on the need to ensure safe driving especially during the ember months. The basic requirements are for motorists to obey traffic laws, avoid overloading and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol,” Omeje said.
Omeje, who called on other organisations to emulate the example of Guinness Nigeria, noted that it was the partnership with the company that gave birth to the project, adding that the donation of breathalyzers by the company had contributed immensely in reducing road accidents in the country.
According to him, the ultimate goal of ensuring reduction of alcohol related road traffic crash will be achieved if all patrol vehicles are equipped with a breathalyzer.”
Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Guinness Nigeria Plc, Peter Ndegwa, disclosed that this year’s campaign would, for the first time, feature structured trainings for new driver’s license applicants and fleet drivers across the country.
He noted that Guinness Nigeria Plc’s commitment to responsible drinking and enlightening the public about the values of responsible alcohol consumption remains unwavering.Ndegwa, therefore, appealed to alcohol beverage consumers, motorists and the general public to desist from mixing alcoholic consumption with driving.
“At Guinness Nigeria, we are passionately committed to responsible drinking. We intend to continue to sensitize the general public all year round through different platforms and programmes on the dangers of drunk driving,” noted Ndegwa. Activities for this year’s programme include road shows, radio talk shows and for the first time, a training program for different categories of drivers.
Corporate Relations Director, Guinness Nigeria Plc, Viola Graham-Douglas, who also addressed journalists at the flag-off ceremony said: “The partnership with FRSC on the Responsible Drinking Initiative has done well to impact motorists and commercial drivers positively since it commenced.”
According to him, Guinness Nigeria is proud to be part of this campaign, which underlines its commitment to the well being of Nigerians and it’s consumers.
“The company is committed to responsible drinking and has consistently advised that motorists should not drive under the influence of alcohol as this may negatively influence the driver, as well as endanger passengers and other road users,” she stated.
