The Proprietor, Lagoon Schools, Chief Yomi Otubela has disclosed that for students to overcome barriers to career success, they must set smart goals.

Speaking at a career mentorship programme in Lagos recently, Otubela noted that such smart goals must be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time bound.

According to him, “ goal setting is an ongoing activity, not just a means to an end. Build reminders to keep yourself on track, and make regular time slots available to review your goals. Your end destination may remain quite similar over the long term, but the action plan you set for yourself along the way can change significantly.”

He explained that the career talk programme tagged, “Nurturing the eagles” was designed to provide the right mentorship to students to guide them in realising their desired future career. The need to provide the right mentorship intervention to students has therefore informed our decision to make career mentorship a termly affair.

On his part, Dr Odusote Peter, Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Lagos State noted that success would be something easy to achieve if it were not for barriers.

“To overcome barriers, students must decide what success means, detach emotionally, look at barriers as outsiders and keep trying.”

Similarly, Mrs. Ranti Okewole, Coordinating Director, Office of Education Quality Assurance, District 1 Agege, listed the important factors of success as self, the job, the pay and the location. She added that barriers to career success include qualifications, mobility, experience, insight, job, performance and health.

In addition, start actress, Sola Kosoko said, “Leadership does not come automatically, it comes when certain things are present in an individual. Some of the requirements for success are education, character, and determination, setting achievable goals, choosing good friends and putting God first.
