National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Sagamu, Ogun State, has held the maiden edition of the OKS Spelling Bee competition at Advance Breed Group of Schools, GRA, Ogun State. The event drew stakeholders from across the state, including proprietors, teachers, parents and officials from the Ministry of Education.

The competition, according to organisers, was aimed at bringing the youth’s attention back to academics and take their minds away from immoral acts, which have become the bane of contemporary society.

Zonal Education Officer at Sagamu local council, Mr. Salako Taiwo Augustine, stressed the importance of the competition, saying it would develop children’s brains and intellect, adding, “This is why I enjoin every parent to encourage their wards to take this competition and other brain-teasing activities seriously. The benefits for the development of the child in the long-run are immeasurable”.

Chairman of NAPPS, Sagamu Zone, Prince Adejuwon David, said, “The present generation of young people are mostly being swayed by the glamorous lifestyle money, music and sex (MMS) brings, which could be detrimental to the future of the country because children are the leaders of tomorrow.

But through programmes like this, we want to re-channel their energies into constructive use.

“Also, the poor reading culture among the younger generation is alarming and it is a big challenge facing the education sector in the country. Through competitions like this, we are encouraging young people to embrace reading.
