Rotary Club donates furniture to Dodan Barracks Pry School
Dodan Barracks Nursery and Primary School, Ikoyi, Lagos State, has taken delivery of 100 sets of furniture, courtesy of the Rotary Club of Ikoyi Metropolitan, District 9110 Nigeria.
About 900 units are still being awaited in the school, which has been grappling with severe dearth of furniture.
President of the club, Michael-Smith Atoe, who described as disheartening, a situation where students sit on the floor during classes, explained that the donation was in line with Rotary International’s objective of offering service to humanity by giving back to the society.
He said the club elected to focus on education-related issues among others for the current Rotary year, in line with its 2015/16 slogan, which is, “Be a Gift to the World.”
According to him, “Rotary is about free service to humanity. Our coming today has further opened our eyes to the situation around here. Taking a tour of Army Day Primary School and Dodan Barracks Nursery and Primary School, what we saw was unbelievable. It was an eyesore. Majority of the classrooms have no seats and these are our children and leaders of tomorrow sitting on bare floor to learn.”
Atoe said it was high time other corporate organisations and religious groups come out to offer a hand of support to the school.
The president, who urged parents to visit facilities in schools where their kids attend, with a view to ascertaining the conditions, which the kids put up with said, the condition around here (Dodan Barracks Nursery and Primary School, Ikoyi) is not pleasant. It is a harrowing experience these kids are going through. Look at their faces. I have taken it upon myself to supply up to 1, 000 desks and benches. I can tell you that the total bill is not up to N2m. What is N2m out of the profits churches and corporate organisations make? I know things are hard, but little things like classroom furniture cannot be over looked,” he said.
