Dr. Prosper Igboeli, Managing Director M and M Hospital, Karshi, Abuja, has solicited the development of stem cell therapy as a method of effective treatment of medical conditions.

He said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the therapy was effective in the treatment of heart failure, diabetes, erectile dysfunction, orthopaedic conditions, spinal cord injuries and stroke, among others.

“In the recent times, scientists and the medical community have promoted the stem cell technology.

“Stem cell is also called regenerative medicine therapy whereby certain cells in our body can repair themselves.

“When I envisage the notion many years ago, I see the need for this therapy to be developed so that some medical conditions can be taken care of locally.

“So I am soliciting government’s assistance in terms of provision of necessary infrastructure such constant power supply,’’ he said.

He said he had desired to establish the hospital in different parts of the country and train more medical personnel to pay adequate attention to patients.

Igboeli also called on non-governmental organisations and spirited individuals to support the development of the therapy.

In a separate interview, Dr Ozy Okonokhua, Health and Human Services, Federal Capital Territory Authority, said that the therapy would be helpful to patients with diabetes, high blood pressure and central nervous system, among others.

He said that the development of the therapy would help many Nigerians, especially patients whose medical conditions could not be managed by drugs.

NAN reports that the management of the hospital recently inaugurated the regenerative medicine treatment and cell expansion centre.
