FG intervenes in senior secondary schools, upgrades GSS Koton Karfi

Dr. Iyela Ajayi

The Federal Government has commenced intervention in some selected secondary schools across the country by ensuring the upgrade of laboratories, libraries, and other infrastructure to meet up with the global trend of teaching and learning.

The Executive Secretary, National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), Dr Iyela Ajayi, who disclosed this in Lokoja during his working visit to the Kogi State commissioner for education, Wemi Jones, said the present administration has selected Government Secondary School, Koton Karfi as the first school in the country to be upgraded, assuring that others will follow.

Ajayi lamented the deplorable state of school laboratories, library and other infrastructure, even as he assured of the commission’s intervention in these areas in no distance time.

He noted that the commission’s proposed minimum standard will significantly reposition senior secondary education, which had suffered neglect and deterioration in terms of staffing and infrastructural development, leading to the production of poor-quality students.

Ajayi assured of the commission’s commitment to the training and retraining of teachers across various subjects, to enable them to impact the students with the right knowledge and position them for global practices.

Earlier, Jones applauded the Federal Government for the establishment of NSSEC to regulate senior secondary education in the country.

The commissioner assured of the Kogi State government’s commitment to educational development, hence the upward review of the sector’s budget to 30 per cent.

He stated that the state would surpass every minimum standard that the commission would set as a benchmark for all senior secondary schools in the country.

Jones also reiterated the administration’s readiness to tackle the out-of-school syndrome, by ensuring that the children return to school through its free education programme.
