A CIVIL society body under the platform Anambra Civil Society Network (ASCONET), has expressed concerns over what it called “spate of violence criminal activities and killings” in different communities in Anambra State.
The group in a statement issued yesterday by its chairman, Prince Chris Azor, and made available to The Guardian, condemned the criminal acts in the affected communities.
The rights group called on security agents to develop and carry out appropriate strategies of curbing the unwholesome acts in the state.
Azor lamented that unwarranted violence, wanton killings and destruction of life and property have become the order of the day in many parts of the state.
He cited the case where about 16 people were killed at a funeral in Ebenebe, Awka North Local Council of the state, when some gunmen invaded the funeral ground, shot sporadically and killed the victims.
Azor recalled a similar incident in Oko and Ekwulobia areas of the state, adding that the same incident happened at a funeral in Nnewi municipality.
“These have been exacerbated by activities of criminal elements around the Ihiala axis, ritual killings and operations of unknown Gunmen (UGM), who have kept the citizens in perpetual fear and trembling,” he added.
