Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has sealed six warehouses stocked with bags of grains and other consumables at Dawanau area of the state.
The hoarded commodities, worth hundreds of millions of Naira, were said to have been stockpiled in the last couple of months by private business owners for profit gains.
Leading a team of security operatives and journalists on an unscheduled inspection yesterday, chairman of the commission, Muhuyi Magagi Rimin-Gado, told reporters that goods were discovered through intelligent information.
He had earlier declared hoarding of food items illegal, threatening the agency’s readiness to arrest and prosecute perpetrators.
Rimin-Gado regretted that despite efforts to mitigate the impact of hunger and high cost of food stuff in the state, some selfish individuals are still busy hoarding essential commodities, adding that the commission had taken control of the facilities.
One of the owners, who concealed his identity, however, claimed that the grains were stocked to meet contract agreements entered with the United Nations and ECOWAS.
The chairman, thereafter, queried the legitimacy of the supply in the face of starvation.
After sealing the facility, he requested for requisite documents.
