There are chances that organised labour may resume its suspended strike in Imo State over the delay to conclude the bilateral discussion and signing of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with the state government.

It threatened that failure to expeditiously schedule and communicate the date for the conclusion of the processes would force labour, in the country, to re-activate its suspended industrial action without any further notice.

A joint letter signed by General Secretaries of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Emmanuel Ugboaja and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Nuhu Toro, and addressed to Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, said the resolution was made by the joint National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of both unions.

The unions demand that the governor should communicate, to the leadership of the two national labour centres, a definite date for the conclusion of the bilateral industrial discussion and the signing of CBA.

The duo stated that two weeks after the State House of Assembly election was conducted, they were yet to hear from the state on a date to conclude the bilateral discussion, which had already considered all issues of dispute and extracted commitments from the Imo State Government, pending the formal signing of a fresh CBA.

The letter recalled that owing to intervention by well-meaning Nigerians and the Congress’ awareness of the consequence of infringing on the rights of the members of the Imo State chapter to exercise their civic rights during elections, the strike was suspended.

The Guardian gathered that the NLC had shut down the state and collapsed operational activities over continued harassment and brutalisation of workers by the state government.
