Lagos records 1,461 emergency incidents in 2023

In 2023, Lagos State said it recorded 1,461 emergency incidents from January 1 to December 31, 2023, with 138 of these incidents attended to in December, Y2023.

By its statutory responsibilities to respond, rescue, recover, and ensure disaster risk reduction in the state, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said it responded to 6,442 incidents between June 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023.

Out of the 138 incidents attended in December 2023, Truck/Tanker category was responsible for 58 incidents, comprising of 39 truck/tanker accidents, 12 breakdowns, two fallen tanker/truck and two stuck Tanker incidents.

The Road Accident category recorded 29 vehicle crashes, the Medical category recorded eight assorted cases, while the Fire Disaster category recorded 11 cases, comprising of seven Fire Outbreaks, one Tanker/Truck and three vehicular fires.


However, 8 incidents were recorded in the Medical Category, while the other events category recorded a total of 19 incidents made up of 2 bridge repairs, 1 Assault, and various cases.

The Building Collapse category recorded 9 cases, comprising of two Building Collapsed, five partial Collapses and two Collapsed Bridges, while the Oil Spillages/Leakages category recorded 1 incident.

There were no cases of Explosions, Marine incidents, Train or Air Crashes, recorded in December, Y2023.


Data Analysis of incidents recorded per Local Government in the month under review reveals that the densely populated Alimosho LGA, with the largest landmass, recorded the highest number of incidents with 25 cases out of the 138 incidents recorded in December, Y2023.

Kosofe LG recorded 22 incidents, Ikeja 15, Mushin and Lagos Island recorded 11 incidents each, Apapa, Oshodi-Isolo and Eti-Osa LGAs recorded 10 incidents each, while Ikorodu and Lagos Mainland experienced 5 incidents each, just as Shomolu recorded 4 incidents.

Amuwo-Odofin recorded 3 incidents, while Surulere and Epe recorded 2 incidents each, with Agege, Ibeju-Lekki and Ifako-Ijaiye LGAs recording 1 incident each in December, Y2023.


Conclusively, the data revealed that the Truck/Tanker category recorded the highest number with 58 incidents from 138 while the Oil Spillage/Leakages category record the least number with 1 incident.

Examination of incidents per Local Government Area reveals that, Alimosho LGA recorded the highest number of incidents with 25 incidents in December, 2023, while Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Ojo and Badagry recorded no incidents at all in the month under review.

Close examination of available data from 1st January to December 31st Y2023 reveals that Lagos State experienced a total of 1,461 incidents, with the Truck/Tanker/Trailer comprising of Accidents, Broken Down and Fallen Trucks/Tankers being responsible for 638 incidents.


Data also revealed that the Road Accidents/Crashes Category comprising of Vehicles, and Fallen Containers placed second with 418 incidents, while Medical Category comprising of Suicides, Attempted Suicides, Dead Bodies placed third with 141 incidents during the year, while the least incidents of 3 were recorded in the Marine, Train and Air Crash Categories.

Data on Emergency Trends in Local Governments for last year reveals that Alimosho Local Government recorded the most number of cases with 242 incidents, while Ikeja Local Government placed a distant second with 191 incidents and Kosofe Local Government placed third with 158 cases, while Ojo LG recorded a low 13 cases and Badagry LGA zero.

On it’s part, the Monthly Emergency Trends revealed that the most cases in a month was recorded in October Y2023, with 145 cases, followed by December with 138 cases and January placed third with 129 cases, while the lowest number of incidents was recorded in May with 106 cases, April with 111 cases and November with 112 cases.

In the last five years (1st June, 2019-31st December, 2023), the Agency has attended to 6,442 incidents in Lagos State where the highest number of incidents was recorded in Y2021 with 1,743 cases, followed by 1,682 recorded cases in Y2022 placing second in a downward trend which was sustained by the Agency in Y2023 with Data recording 1,461 cases.
