Lekki massacre must not kill our fighting spirit, TNNC tells Nigerians

• Amnesty accuses FG of shielding suspected shooters
The New Nigeria Coalition (TNNC) has urged Nigerians not to be dissuaded by the massacre at Lekki tollgate last year in the fight to actualise a new Nigeria and encourage visionary leaders.

Interim National Coordinator of the group, Ishaya Inuwa, in an online press conference yesterday, warned that the country could not continue to do the same thing every time and expect a different result.

“The sad event at the Lekki tollgate, the shooting of peaceful protesters, must not kill our spirits; it should be the beginning of a new thing. We must immortalise the people (that were killed). That’s the reason we came up with the vision of birthing a new Nigeria,” he said.

MEANWHILE, Amnesty International has accused the Federal Government of shielding security operatives who carried out the brutal crackdown on peaceful #EndSARS protesters at Lekki and Alausa in Lagos last year.

It lamented that 100 days after the ugly incident that allegedly claimed 12 lives, the Nigerian authorities had failed to bring to justice those suspected to be responsible for the attack.

Amnesty’s Director, Osai Ojigho, stated yesterday: “The bloody events of October 20, 2020, when Nigerian security forces killed at least 12 people during the violent dispersal of peaceful #EndSARS protesters at Lekki and Alausa, have cast a shadow over the Nigerian society that lingers till this day.

“Instead of bringing the suspected perpetrators to justice and prioritising genuine police reforms, Nigerian authorities have been abusing their powers by subjecting those who supported the protests to intimidation, harassment and smear campaigns.”

It called on the government to suspend accused officials, pending investigations, and to ensure that victims access justice and effective remedies.
