Remodelling Your Kitchen the Budget-Friendly Way
Everyone has their favourite room/space in every house they live in or visit. For me, it’s the kitchen and that’s not just because I’m a foodie. I’ve always fancied spacious kitchens and kitchens that have a good flow – colour coordination or some sort of theme. You’ll realise that the way your kitchen looks is a contributing factor to how well you cook, and even dine, in it. If you’re not very fond of your kitchen, maybe it’s time for a little remodelling.
Remodelling your kitchen doesn’t mean you have to spend hundreds of thousands of naira. Unless of course, you feel like you would much rather just spend a lot of money and have someone do it for you. It also doesn’t have to be done in one swell swoop.
Here are a few budget-friendly tips for remodelling your kitchen:-
Install New Lighting and Light Fixtures
Lighting should always be the first thing to be changed, because that’s a large part of your kitchen’s ambience. Invest in a few fancy light fixtures and florescent lighting, to not only give your kitchen a cosy feel, but to brighten it up as well. Determine how many you need and where you’re going to place them before you go shopping.
Repaint Where You Can
When remodelling your kitchen, you don’t have to repaint the whole space. Simply repaint the cabinets, drawers, and surfaces like your stove and counter tops. If you feel up to it, you can repaint your walls as well. If you have wooden floors, you can consider polishing or painting them to match your new walls and/or counter tops.
Change Your Kitchen Hardware
Are your cabinet and drawer handles and knobs looking worse for wear? Switch them out for new ones. If you know where to shop, new knobs and handles shouldn’t run up a lot of money. Just like with the light fixtures, be sure of how many you need before you go to the market. If you’re remodelling your kitchen with a certain theme in mind, look out for hardware that complements this theme.
Upgrade Accessories and Kitchenware
Maybe you don’t have the budget to drastically remodel your kitchen. It’s no reason to lose hope. Small changes can be the overhaul your kitchen needs if you do them right. You can replace outdated racks and trays with artisan ones, and display your pantry items, kitchenware, and utensils beautifully. While you’re at it, replace your kitchenware if you know its seen better days. Bring out those pot sets you’re saving for a rainy day because the rain is here. Also, I always try to get matching utensil sets. It seems corny, but it helps create a flow.
General Tips for Remodelling Your Kitchen
- Before you start, decide on what you want your new kitchen to look like. This will help you work towards a coordinated flow, and not have everything clashing.
- Start with the little things and work up to the big things. If you plan to repaint and it will be inconvenient for you, start with the little changes like the lights and utensils, and then do the painting when you can afford to leave your kitchen be for a little while.
- Whenever you can, DIY. It will save you a tonne of money. And, even though it can be a bit stressful, no one can perfectly execute the ideas you have for your dream kitchen but you.
