Fashion designer Stella McCartney became the inaugural recipient of the Special Recognition Award for Innovation at the event for her work in promoting animal rights and sustainability in fashion. McCartney, who does not use leather, PVC or fur in her clothing, said in late November that the fashion industry needed to reform its approach to sustainability.

Other designers at the event were in agreement with McCartney, with Britain's Anya Hindmarch claiming sustainable fashion is 'high on the agenda in the industry' but that it will 'take time to change'. Board member of crystal-producer Swarovski, Nadja Swarovski, also said she hoped to see more 'mindfulness' in the fashion industry about sustainability and wanted companies to research and develop in that area.
