LP/NLC face-off: Let bygones be bygones, Abure begs NLC

National Chairman of Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has begged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its leadership to forget the past and join the LP to end the bad governance tormenting Nigerians.

Abure made the plea during a briefing at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, yesterday.

NLC had stormed the party headquarters to express discontent with the leadership and the perceived betrayal of its foundational principles.

The Labour Centre had called for the resignation of Abure, whom it accused of attempts to orchestrate a convention under the cover of darkness and bypassing the agreed-upon inclusive approach.

Despite their misgivings, Abure was reelected in the controversial convention of the party in Nnewi, Anambra State.

But NLC voided the convention.

To fill the vacuum, stakeholders announced that NLC would set up a transition committee to oversee the affairs of the party, till new officers are elected in three months.

Abure, at the briefing, pleaded that it would be in the collective interest of LP, NLC and elected members of the party in the National Assembly for the party to be at peace to chart a new course for the nation.

He said, “We must create an enabling environment to capture power and use same for the betterment of our people.

“I appeal to first, my brother, friend and President of NLC, Joe Ajaero, with whom we have worked together in the trenches over the years in the struggle for the workers, to put aside whatever may be his grievances and let’s work in the interest of our people.”

According to him, fighting LP currently is uncalled for and unwarranted, especially at this time when Nigerian workers are suffering.

“We need not dissipate our collective energies in fighting ourselves over nothing. We feel that all the bickering, fights and attacks on the party leadership are unnecessary; more so, they are anchored on falsehood, motivated by inordinate ambition and selfish interest.

“It is, therefore, in our collective interest to put all our energies and resources together and begin to fight our common enemy and reposition our party for better performance.”
