Again, fire guts Watt Market in Calabar

The burnt section of the market


Two years ago, Watt Market in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, was on fire.On Monday November 27, property worth millions of naira were destroyed when a section of the market, Yoruba Line was again razed down.

The Guardian could not confirm if anyone was hurt or killed in the incident.Eye witnesses said the fire started at about 8.15p.m. and raged for hours before the Fire Service men arrived to put out the fire. 

Many shop owners made frantic efforts to salvage their goods without success.One of the traders, Baba Ola said: “I am finished. These were all I had been living on. God, please come to my rescue. It is a disaster”.

Another trader, who simply gave his name as Ade, said they had called the Fire Service but did not get any response and had to deal with the situation themselves, “but the fire was too much for us”. Neither the witnesses nor the fire officials could confirm the cause of the fire outbreak.
