The Vice Chancellor (VC) of Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof. Adebiyi Daramola, has been given a seven-day ultimatum to apologise for allegedly defying the Deji (the city’s monarch), Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, and its traditional institution.

This was contained in a statement issued to journalists in the Ondo State capital yesterday and jointly signed by the Chairman, Akure Community Development Forum (ACDF), Chief Reuben Fasoranti (OFR) and the Chairman, Akure Council of Chiefs, High Chief James Olusoga.

The Akure community leaders and stakeholders, under the auspices of the ACDF, said: “The community observed with utter disappointment and shock the manner in which Daramola has dragged the Deji-in-Council and the community into contempt with his utterances and behaviour.

“The community notes that it is sacrilegious for the vice chancellor to desecrate the traditional institution of Akure, and this will not be tolerated by the people of Akure kingdom.

“The community has now issued a seven-day ultimatum to Prof. Daramola to apologise to the Deji of Akure and the Akure community for the lack of respect he has shown to our traditional institution.”

However, Daramola has refuted the allegation, dispelling it as a misrepresentation of his actions.

He affirmed that the university has held the Deji in high esteem “not only because he is the chief host of our institution and the custodian of the culture and traditions of the good people of Akure kingdom but also because he has shown interest in the development and affairs of FUTA.”

He went on: “He has since his ascension to the esteemed throne of his fore-fathers shown repeatedly that he is a father to all and a peace-maker. Indeed, but for his fatherly role and quick interventions at various levels, the crisis in FUTA would have escalated.”

Daramola declared that the entire university community has no reason whatsoever and never in any way dragged the Deji-in-Council and the Akure community into disrepute or shown contempt to the monarch and traditional institution.

He added: “We also seize this opportunity to tender unreserved apology to Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi Odundun II and the Deji-in-Council over the crisis and whatever injury some misrepresentations may have caused.
