Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel has charged the newly sworn-in 31council chairmen and 329 councilors not to take the people for granted but ensure that they benefit from their programmes at all times.

He gave the admonition while swearing-in the local council chairmen yesterday at the Bouquet Hall, Government House, Uyo, saying they should rise above personal creed and render selfless service to the people.

He reminded them to that they were elected by the people to effectively represent their interests, stressing that they have no reason to fail the people.

“The office you have just been sworn into today should not be seen as a platform for immediate gratification, or one where you would engage in conspicuous consumption to the detriment of the people who had sent you to represent them.

“As council chairmen, you are the direct voice, the echo chamber of the peoples’ issues and concerns, please endeavour to listen to them and work to meet their demands to the best of your ability.

“You are not on a course for applause but on a journey that is measured on solid delivery of service to the people.
Once you are able to achieve that, the people will in turn give you standing ovation for meeting them at the intersection of their needs.

“Leadership is not about excuses. Leadership is not about leaving the problems of today for tomorrow.

It requires healthy doses of decisiveness and being proactive. Let this be your guiding principle,” he said.

He commended the chairmen and councilors for scaling through the election successfully on Saturday, December 2, 2017, the State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) for the great job they did in ensuring a free, transparent and peaceful election and other observers for testifying to the fact that, the election was free, fair and transparent.

Udom also thanked the people of the state for still reaffirming their faith in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the political party that has brought great development to the state.
