No fewer than 340 motorists were tried and convicted by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) mobile court in Anambra in the month of February.

Mr Sunday Ajayi, the FRSC Sector Commander in Anambra, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Saturday.

Ajayi said a total of 353 drivers were arrested and tried by the court, while 13 were acquitted and discharged.

According to him, the motorists were charged with offences, ranging from overloading, worn-out/expired tyres, speed violation and use of cell phone while driving.

Other offences were non-possession of or expired particulars, no fire extinguishers and dangerous driving.

“As part of our effort to ensure sanity on the road, the Anambra command has been on steady patrol and our mobile court has been busy to provide speedy and effective apprehension of offenders and penalty to the culpable.

“For the month of February, 353 drivers were arrested and made to face the mobile court.

“Out of the drivers, 340 of them were convicted for offences such as overloading, worn-out/expired tyres, speed violation among others.

“Thirteen of them were discharged,” Ajayi said.

The sector commander urged motorists to adhere to traffic rules and shun behaviours that would pitch them against the law.

He also encouraged them to be safety conscious and cooperate with the Commission in its effort to minimise road traffic crashes.
