The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra has said it will commence the enforcement of the use of pedestrian bridges in the state to reduce the rate of accidents on the highways.

The State’s Sector Commander of the corps, Mr Sunday Ajayi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Awka, that pedestrians and motorcyclists should always use the pedestrian bridges for their safety.

He said that the state command of the FRSC though this was expedient because of the forthcoming Easter celebrations.

Then, residents of the state would be receiving visitors who might drive recklessly on the highways.

“We have constantly warned pedestrians to use the foot-bridges provided by the state government to reduce crashes on the roads but pedestrians have not been complying.

“We do know that during celebrations like the upcoming Easter, people are in high spirit and may default in obeying traffic rules while driving.

“So, we are appealing to Anambra residents to ensure that they use the pedestrian bridges in the state to avoid crashes this period,’’ he said.

He advised pedestrians and motorcycle riders to stop crossing from one side of the Enugu- Onitsha expressway to the other side by placing planks on its deep drains.

They should cultivate the habit of using the pedestrian bridge instead of exposing their lives to avoidable dangers, he said.
.
“Several lives have been lost due to road crashes between Arroma -Unizik junction axis of the expressway due to disrespect to traffic laws.

“I want to warn that anybody caught in such an act this period will be prosecuted, “he said.

The sector commander assured the public that the corps would do its best to ensure that causes of road crashes would be seriously monitored during Easter to avoid carnage on the state’s roads.
