Gunmen kill labour leader, two others in Kogi

NLC, TUC suspend negotiation with govt over murder
Unidentified gunmen yesterday killed the Kogi State Chairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of Secondary Schools Science and Technology Education Board (STEB), Abdulmumini Yakubu.

He was killed at Ozuwaya in Okene Local Council of the state alongside one Ibrahim Otaru while discussing some community issues with him.

Sources close to the family disclosed that five heavily armed gunmen unleashed mayhem with several gunshots killing the two while they were praying.

The sources added that the assassins in a commando style alighted from a Toyota Sienna car and opened fire on them.

Until his death, Yakubu was a staff of the Kogi State Science Teachers Board Lokoja, NASU Chairman and Ozuwaya Community Chairman.

Gunmen also murdered a 55 year-old man, identified as Abdulganiu Aduki, injured his five-year old daughter and his wife at Nagazi in Adavi Council of the state.

The incident happened at Inori Street in Nagazi Community at 7 .30pm on Tuesday.

Eyewitness said the gunmen were alleged to be hired assassins who attacked Abdulganiu and his family and left without taking away any item.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), William Ayah, confirmed the incident adding that Abdulganiu’s killers would be arrested and prosecuted.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended negotiation with the Kogi State Government on the ongoing strike following Yakubu’s murder in Okene.

The state government and the labour movement had commenced negotiation to resolve the six-week strike but the death of NASU chairman has truncated the hope of a quick resolution of the issues.

Chairman of NLC, Comrade Onuh Edoka and his TUC counterpart, Comrade Ranti Matthew Ojo made this known in a statement in Lokoja.

They said the negotiation, which was supposed to continue with government was suspended to enable the labour leaders to mourn their slain colleague.
