Kebbi council chairman-elect, others absent from swearing-in

The Kalgo Local Council Chairman-elect, Alhaji Na Mashaya Diggi; his deputy and the entire councillors were yesterday absent from the swearing-in ceremony of the newly-elected 21 local council chairmen.

Their non-appearance at the ceremony held at the Waziri Umar Polytechnic Hall, Birnin Kebbi, followed a public rift at a dinner party organised in honour of the new council chairmen where the governor, Atiku Abubakar Bagudu, became visibly angry because of the absence of the chairman in a group photograph on Sunday.

The governor thereafter staged a walkout before the intervention of some top government functionaries at the Presidential Banquet Hall venue of the dinner.

He, however, swore to Almighty God that the chairman would not be sworn in.

But shortly after the governor’s decision, the chairman surfaced and attributed his delay to security challenges at the gate of the lodge. He was, however, showed the way out of the hall by the Secretary to State Government, the Chief of Staff, Personal Assistant to the Governor and some handful security personnel.

Meanwhile, an unconfirmed report said that the chairman might have been put under arrest at the state police headquarters in Birnin Kebbi.

Efforts to reach the Commissioner of Police was unsuccessful as visit to his office and calls and text massages to his mobile phone were not successful.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman, Maccido Attahiru, thanked the electorate for the conduct of the election, adding that the present administration was ready to assist and support the people of the state most especially in terms of developmental aspect.

Also, Bagudu expressed satisfaction over the free and fair of the election. He, therefore, urged the elected chairmen to be dedicated to their promises by providing dividends of democracy to the electorate.
