LP, UPP Hail Buhari Over Zakari’s Appointment
THE Labour Party (LP) and the United Peoples Congress have hailed the decision of President Mohammadu Buhari to appoint Amina Zakari as acting chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following the end of tenure of the former chairman professor Attahiru Jega.
The political parties also condemned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for asking President Muhammadu Buhari to reverse the appointment of the acting chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), upholding the presidency’s claim that the appointment was in order.
This came as the LP has also faulted the All Progressives Congress (APC) for claiming that President Buhari has achieved a lot within the first month of his tenure. National Chairman of the LP, Abdukadir Abdulsalam told reporters yesterday in Abuja that the LP after its assessment of the pedigree and records of the former INEC national commissioner congratulated Zakari on her appointment and pledged to work with her.
“This is apart from being the first woman head of INEC appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari. We have related, work and interacted with her at the commission, and have assessed her pedigree. We are convinced that the president made the right decision in appointing her.
This does not make her partisan, or supportive of any political party, unless the PDP is not serious about their so-called opposition,” Abdulsalam said. He, however, urged Buhari should to take his time to appoint a substantive INEC chairman, saying such a position is not a tea party that anyone can just be picked to occupy.
