The World Economic Forum (WEF) has recognised Abayomi Awobokun, the Chief Executive Officer of Oando Downstream, as one of its 2016 Young Global leaders, amongst an impressive list of 121 contenders.

WEF, who described Awobokun as “CEO of Nigeria’s biggest indigenous oil retailing major”, launched the highly regarded Young Global Leaders programme in 2004 as a platform to recognise outstanding and committed leaders from various fields including arts, business and politics.

Selected individuals go through an extensive nomination process and assessment based on rigorous benchmarks. This is followed by a five-year fellowship to promote a better society based on collaboration, learning and action.

Awobokun is responsible for overseeing the downstream operations of Oando Plc. He also spearheads the trading and retail operations of the business in the United Kingdom, Mozambique, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, Ghana, Togo, and North Africa.

He joins an enviable list of other honorees from all regions of the world including Mark Zuckerberg, Founder and CEO of Facebook; and Anderson Cooper and Sanjay Gupta, both of CNN.

Beyond his immediate role as CEO of Oando Downstream, Awobokun is actively involved in the Freedom Foundation, a faith-based initiative, which seeks to rehabilitate adults exposed to the use of recreational drugs.
