Seven health workers die in auto crash in Kaduna


Seven members of Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria lost their lives on Tuesday in a road crash along Rikolo village, a few kilometres to Zaria.

The affected union leaders were delegates from Yobe, Jigawa, Bauchi, Katsina and Kano states.

The deceased on their way to Keffi in Nasarawa State to attend a Federal Health Institutions Medical and Health Workers Forum.

They died when their vehicle rammed into a ditch at about 3.00 p.m. The driver lost control and the vehicle somersaulted.

Confirming the accident, Chairman Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital Branch of Medical and Health Workers’ Union, Serki Adamu Musa, said six of them died on the spot while the seventh person died at Ahmadu Bello Teaching Hospital, Chika.

Musa said the delegates included executive members of Federal Medical Centre, Nguru, in Yobe State; Federal Medical Centre Azare in Bauchi State; Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kudu, Jigawa State; Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.

Others were two members of National Orthopedics Hospital Dala in Kano and Secretary of Medical and Health Workers Union (AKTH) Branch, Muhammad Ya’u Ibrahim.

While other deceased were taken to their various states for burial, Muhammad Ya’u Ibrahim was buried in Kano metropolis yesterday, Musa said.

Meanwhile, the state Chairman of the Medical and Health Workers Union, Kabiru Ado Minjibri has commiserated with the families of the deceased.

He expressed shock over the development and prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed comrades.
