Police arrested over 700 offenders during 2023 general elections, says IGP

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) arrested over 700 offenders for violation of electoral laws during the 2023 general elections.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali Baba said this on Monday at a meeting with Commissioners of Police and senior officers to evaluate their performance during the 2023 elections.

The IGP put the exact figure of those arrested during the general elections at 781.

Alkali Baba said 185 cases of electoral infractions were recorded during the presidential election with 203 arrests made.


For the Governorship and State Assembly elections, he stated that 304 electoral breaches were recorded and 578 offenders were arrested.

He commended the Senior Police Officers and Commanders and other ranks for their resilience, sacrifices, and professionalism.

He said their acts ensured the containment of the pockets of election security breaches across the country during the electioneering process.
