PDP disowns Ugwuanyi’s reelection campaign posters

Apparently in response to the 2019 general elections timetable released last week by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the reelection campaign posters of Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has now flooded the state.

The campaign posters bearing the logo of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) with the inscriptions, “No Vacancy in 2019” emanated from a group known as “Mbakwe Gburugburu Continuity in 2019.”A source close to the group told The Guardian on anonymity that the earlier posters was “our way of telling the public that there is no alternative to Ugwuanyi,” stressing that, it was also to “mobilise and prepare the public towards his reelection for another four years.”

Asked whether the posters were not to direct the mind of the governor towards reelection campaigns against governance, the source added: “It is really not to make him lose focus. We believe that he has done well and should be allowed to continue. So for us, this is a kind of encouragement.”

Although, several residents were surprised with the sudden emergence of the posters, another source added that it was an indication that Ugwuanyi would be running for a second term in office and should be the sole candidate of the PDP in the election.

Reacting to the development yesterday, the state chapter of the party said it has nothing to do with the campaign posters, stressing that it was too early in the day for anybody to begin the reelection process.

State chairman of the party, Augustine Nnamani, said rather than begin campaign for governorship with posting of posters; the group should channel their efforts towards mobilizing voters for the ongoing registration exercise in the state.

Nnamani said: “The Party appreciates the goodwill and solidarity of the group and other related associations, but wishes to state that what is ultimate in its agenda at the moment is total mobilisation of eligible voters in the state to register with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the forthcoming general elections.

“The Party, therefore, appeals to the groups to channel their efforts towards the Voters’ Registration, which would ensure the actualisation of our ultimate goal in 2019.”
