The officers were arrested, yesterday, following a video which trended on social media at the weekend showing four officers in a police van, hijacking ballot boxes and throwing some away after voters raised alarm, snapped photos and shot videos of them.
The Guardian gathered that the police pick-up van, which the officers used in the trending video has been impounded for thorough investigation.
Spokesperson for the Command, Superintendent of Police (SP), Grace Iringe-Koko, in a statement, assured the electorate in the state that the Command was committed to promoting the rule of law and ensuring that all officers found culpable would be adequately sanctioned.
According to her, the officers are currently in police custody.
She, however, urged residents to remain calm and wait for the official announcement of the election results.
“Following a video, which trended on social media and which suggested the involvement of some police personnel operating in a Pick Up Vehicle with inscription: “RRT 050” in alleged electoral malpractice, Rivers State Police Command has arrested and taken into custody one officer and three inspectors for interrogation.
“The Command, hereby, assures the electorate in Rivers State of its unalloyed commitment to promoting the rule of law, and ensuring that all offenders found culpable are adequately sanctioned.”
