DJ Cuppy Releases New Mixtape, HOC 2
FOLLOWING the success of her first compilation mix, House of Cuppy, which was released in July 2014, DJ Cuppy, daughter of Nigerian billionaire and oil magnate, has released House of Cuppy 2, a sequel to her 2014 EP.
The new mix tape picks up from where HOC left off. HOC2 as a conceptual compilation is adorable. The House genre is really underappreciated in Nigeria, even though it is often used in fusions with Afrobeat to create pop music. The application of that concept still leaves more to be desired. Cuppy’s quest to remake those songs with her signature genre is admirable and revolutionary.
HOC2 contains five archived songs including Olamide’s Awon Goons; P-Square’s Personally, Johnny by Yemi Alade, AKA’s All Eyes On Me, and Seyi Shay’s Crazy featuring Wizkid. Also included are three non-musical additions in the form of an intro, outro, and a skit, which feeds the mixer’s ego.
The engineering Cuppy threw into all the tracks are superb; although, Crazy surprisingly, has timing issues, the house-infused version of the duet lacks taste. It blares through the speakers as an intro to something better. For some people, it keeps them waiting for more, while for others with little patience simply hold down the ‘next’ button.
All Eyes On Me sits atop the new work as the best of the material. Cuppy’s talent and efforts match and surely would make the playlists with a perfect arrangement of synths, beats, and instrumentation. Lacing the vocals over the instrumentals rolls off as dripping honey on bun. In many ways one would think, the song has met its destiny.
The choice of songs comes across as whimsical. According to her, the intention is simple, “grab hit songs from Nigeria, infuse, mix, and mash them with contemporary house beats, and create a remix. Do that to a number of songs, create an extended play, and release it; easy and nice,” she said.
Dusting and recycling old music will never gain much advantage on music listeners; neither will it help to push the house genre. Remixing hit songs with house is a tall order, but when the hit songs are a year old, and has faded away from public playlists and memory, then the results are usually never stratospheric.
With an internship at Jay Z’s ROC Nation, with the objective of acquiring more and better skills as well as bestowing her with greater powers. The EP is a personal success for Cuppy, as she can boast of two house compilations.
Although, HOC2 may not move mountains despite all its hype and publicity as the content is less than revolutionary. DJ Cuppy is still a work in progress; many hope there will be ‘HOC 3’ and the songs would picked from the hit songs of the moment.
