TV drama, Professor Johnbull, flays prohibitive bride
Telecom giant, Globacom sponsored TV drama series, Professor Johnbull in its current episode titled Not for Sale ocuses on high bride price. The 5th episode in the fifth season of the social satire highlights the activities of those who profit from prohibitive bride prices.
The highly educative episode features Nollywood veterans, Chika Okpala (Zebrudaya) and Amaechi Muonagor, who play the role of Igbo elders who want to ensure that the tradition of their people are followed strictly during their wards’ marriage.
In the episode, Okpala accompanies his nephew, Paul (Stanley Igboanugo) to Muonagor’s home to formally ask for the hand of his beautiful daughter in marriage but they were shocked by Muonagor’s decision to stop them at the doorstep to ask for different payments including ‘money to clear his throat’ and ‘money to close the door’ before they were eventually allowed to enter the house.
Muonagor also proceeds to present a voluminous book containing the list of requirements the visitors must fulfill before the marriage rites can be formalized. This infuriates them and they decided to leave immediately while the girl proceeds to Professor Johnbull’s house to report her father.
According to her, the father’s (Muonagor) constant misconduct is about to rob her of her fourth prospective husband, threatening to escape with her heartthrob ‘for free’ if her father does not scale down his list.
Attention then shifts to Olaniyi’s (Yomi Fash-Lanso) nkwobi restaurant, where a fight breaks out between Ufuoma (Bimbo Akintola) and Jumoke (Bidemi Kosoko) because Ufuoma intercepts a gift from a rude suitor who proposes to marry Jumoke.
All the affected parties later converge in Professor Johnbull’s sitting room, where the issues are resolved amicably, with the erudite Professor calling on those whose stock in trade is to profiteer from charging exorbitant bride prices to put an end to it.
The drama series comes on air on NTA Network, NTA International on DSTV Channel 251 and NTA on Startimes, at 8.30 pm on Tuesday.
