Where are Nigerian social clubs of yesteryears?

Before Nigeria’s Independence, social clubs were already in existence in the country. Although then, it was more of foreigners’ affair, alongside few privileged Nigerians.

Lagos, the then capital of Nigeria, was the centre of social clubs of different aims, activities and membership. With Nigeria’s independence, more Nigerians, especially in the major cities of Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano and others formed and joined different social clubs, having become a status thing.

Today, while many are asking where are the social clubs, others are questioning their importance and activities in the society. Some even believe that some of them have outlived their usefulness and have become more of secret cults. Especially considering the stringent conditions for one to become a member.

Even at that, some of them, especially in the commercial city of Lagos, such as Yoruba Tennis Club that marked 90 years recently are still waxing stronger with membership cut across every strata of the society. Others have, however, gone into extinction or merely exist by name.
