Speaker urges unity in fight against crime

Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Sheriff Oborevwori

Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Sheriff Oborevwori, has called for unity in the fight against crime in the country, saying the monster must be tackled promptly.

In his welcome address at the resumption of plenary after Christmas and New Year break, Oborevwori expressed concern over the increasing rate of crimes in the country, saying: “We are all painfully aware of the rising crime rate in the country. During the break, gunmen in Warri attacked our colleague, representing Ughelli South State Constituency, Izeze Rume Yakubu Reuben, on December 24, 2021. By the special grace of God, he survived the attack.”

He said the House has a duty to make laws for the peace, order and good governance of the state. The primary purpose of government, according to him, is security and welfare of the people.

“Therefore, in collaboration with the Executive, we will ensure everyone up in arms against our people is quickly brought to justice wherever they are in the state,” he said.

Oborevwori recalled that before the break, the House passed a number of bills into laws that have been assented to by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, a feat, he said, was made possible by cooperation and support of members.

He charged committees to double their efforts and report to plenary, all outstanding referrals. Oborevwori congratulated the management staff of the House for their successful retreat and expressed gratitude to colleagues for their continuous support for the House leadership.
