England-based Nigerian boxers, Ajose Olusegun and Larry Ekundayo, have donated boxing kits to Nigerian youths interested in taking to the punching game as a career. They said it is part of their efforts to develop and create more awareness in the sport at the grassroots level.

The duo, who are Nigeria’s best boxers in the world, accompanied by head of Britain’s leading sports agency, World Class Athletes Ltd, Ben Gray, took time out to educate and train the youths on the rudiments of boxing at the boxing gymnasium of the National Stadium Surulere, Lagos.

Ajose, a former Olympian, and World title challenger, and Ekundayo, who is a current undefeated African champion, said their mission in the country was to contribute their own quota in assisting the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) revive the sport in the country.

According to Ajose, “Boxing over the years has declined because the youths don’t have anybody to mentor them in boxing.

“I have represented Nigeria in international championships and also contended for world titles. Boxing has made me successful as a man, and I believe coming back to encourage the young ones with this gesture will assist develop the sport in Nigeria.

“Apart from Lagos, we are also moving to other states to promote the gospel of boxing. My target is also to promote the Nigerian image by donning the green and white colours anywhere I find myself. I thank our sponsors for assisting us come this far,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, Ekundayo noted that Nigerian youths are very talented in boxing owing to the skills displayed during training, adding, however, that they needed encouragement to make good use of their talents.

The Executive Director of the Nigerian Diaspora Direct Investment Summit and former head of the Central Association of Nigerians in the United Kingdom, Bimbo Folayan, who has been mobilising Nigerians and government to support the boxers and invest in Nigeria, accompanied the duo to the event.
