CKA seeks development of pupils ICT knowledge through competition

With the understanding that early exposure to the basics of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), will help reposition pupils and equip them with the ICT skills required for future learning, City of Knowledge Academy (CKA), Ogun State, has organised ICT competition for public and private primary school pupils in Nigeria.

Head of School, Abiola Lamikanra, while disclosing the intent of the school’s new ICT project, as part of its contribution to societal growth, said in today’s world good knowledge of ICT places learners across the globe at vantage position, saying Nigerian kids will not be left behind.

She said the school realises that the real world is a digital world where only digitalised individuals will thrive, urging schools to step up their games in the teaching and learning of ICT.

She maintained that when pupils are exposed to the basics of ICT and are well guided they do not only benefit, the society also do. She said more than 65 per cent of CKA pupils are Microsoft certified and this was achieved through deliberate effort and support.

She said, “In CKA, we are leveraging on everything good to educate the child. We have realised the benefits of technological aids to education, so we are starting this campaign to reawaken the consciousness of schools on the need to deploy ICT to teaching and learning. This is something we have been practising and the benefits are immense. Teachers use the technological devices in our school to bring the world into the classroom, and with all our pupils having their tablets; we are becoming a paperless community.

“We are using the competition to empower teachers from participating schools to rightly engage the pupils and offer them basic learning. Through the online portal we gave participating schools curriculum to guide them on what is required. We need to give the Nigerian child all the ICT support they need.”

Vice Principal Academics, Emmanuel Kolapo, said the competition, which is intended to encourage young children to be ICT compliant, will be in two parts. “It is a 21st century competition, we will test pupils theoretical and practical ability to ascertain what they know about ICT. They are expected to communicate, collaborate and display that they are critical thinkers during the exercise.”
