Ikorodu United appoints dutchman as technical director
The management of Ikorodu United FC of Lagos on Thursday said it has appointed former Dutch international footballer, Jacob de Jong, as its new Technical Director.
The club confirmed the appointment of the Dutchman after parting ways with their former gaffer, Sam Okpodu, by mutual consent on June 13, 2016.
Ikorodu United, debutants in the Nigeria Football Professional League (NPFL), has had strings of uninspiring results in the competition.
The club is currently at the base of the NPFL log with 15 points from 21 league matches; it won 3, drew 6 and lost 12.
However, to improve the club’s fortunes, the management appointed de Jong who was saddled with the responsibility of taking the club out of relegation.
On the task ahead of the new coach, its Media Officer, Babatunde Ayoola, told NAN the coach was given a mandate to improve the clubs standing in the NPFL log.
“The mandate given to the coach is to get Ikorodu United out of relegation and at least consolidate our position in the premier league.
“This is a bold step from the management of our club in ensuring that we escape relegation and other things will come in.
“We cannot recruit new players now but we will make do with the ones we have, so, we will wait till the end of the season.
“We cannot also change our match venue for now because of LMC’s policy; we will consider that next season,’’ he said.
Theodorus, a.k.a. Theo Jacob de Jong, was born Aug. 11, 1947 in Leeuwarden. He is a former Dutch international footballer.
During his career, he played for NEC Nijmegen and Feyenoord Rotterdam.
He earned 15 caps and scored 3 goals for the Netherlands national football team and was a member of the Dutch squad in 1974 FIFA World Cup finals.
The ex-Dutch international was a member of the Feyenoord team that won the UEFA Cup in 1974, beating Tottenham Hotspur in the then two-legged final.
He later played three seasons in Hong Kong for Seiko.
