Rivers United ready for titanic clash with Club Africain
It is a game they must win to remain in contention for semifinals of the CAF Confederation. Yet, beating Club Africain will require much more than Rivers United have done in the local league.
Placed in a tricky group where all teams have six points each, Rivers United will be out for victory to reach the top two for the first time.Although all four teams have six points each, United is placed third on the log due to inferior goals aggregate.
Club Africain won the previous encounter 3-1, but United’s gaffer, Stanley Eguma, knows victory will boost his chances of making it to the knock-out stages. It is the final road trip match for the Tunisians after losing at FUS Rabat and KCCA, respectively.
Rivers United main weapon is their attack where Bolaji Sarkin, Bernard Ovoke, Fred Obomate and John Odumegwu operate.Incidentally, the quartet has one goal each from previous matches. Ovoke is capable of creating anxious moments in the opponents’ area with his colleagues on alert to maximize opportunities created.
Odumegwu got a goal on his continental debut at Club Africain and has the ability to force his way through the defence. For the first time, Rivers United look good to score more than two goals in the group stage.
If the attack is formidable, the reverse is the case at the rear, where Rivers United has conceded six goals.Adequate changes must be made at the rear to deal with the experienced Club Africain attackers.
In the absence of skipper Festus Austin, Eguma introduced Lekan Gabriel, who was match day captain against Ugandan side, KCCA and the last league match against Shooting Stars Sports Club.
However, as it was in the reverse fixture, the defence went to sleep momentarily and allowed the visitors a chance to hit target.Full backs, Ifeanyi Nweke and Zoumana Doumbia, must be alert to frustrate the fast Club African wingers. Unbeaten in the competition at home, United will count on the backing of their partisan crowd on match day to overcome the Tunisians, in what is the last home match.
