SUBEB links out-of-school children in Ondo to insecurity, migration from North

Victor Olabimtan

• Seeks support to curb menace
• Says state no longer bedrock of education
• Akintelure vows to turn state’s fortunes around as gov

The Chairman of Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Victor Olabimtan, yesterday, revealed that no fewer than 240,000 out-of-school children abound in the state.

Olabimtan, while raising the alarm, said that all was being done to curb the menace, stressing that the situation was being influenced by the insecurity in the northern part of the country, which he said, had fuelled migration to the South.

The SUBEB chairman, who spoke with newsmen, added that the notion that the state is the bedrock of education was already being eroded, going by available statistics. He said that to arrest the situation, the governor had approved the recruitment of teachers across the state.

MEANWHILE, a governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Paul Akintelure, yesterday, reiterated his commitment to revolutionise and uplift every sector of Ondo State if he secures the party’s ticket for the governorship election.

Akintelure, a running mate to the late Oluwarotimi Akeredolu in 2012 on the platform of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), said that if he emerged as governor, it would be a departure from the status quo and a bold step towards a brighter future for the state.

He also expressed his determination to steer the state towards prosperity, adding that he would double the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the state within 12 months in office.

Akintelure said Ondo State had no reason to remain under-developed, assuring that he would explore and exploit all natural and human resources in the state to take it to another great pedestal. He, therefore, promised to give the education and medical sectors of the state economy to human capacity-building to enhance development in the state.
