Business and speed
While some people described this age as the “Fast age,” others see it as the “Computer age” or “Jet age.” This shows that this generation is more impatient than any previous generation. One of the major differences between different computers is SPEED. Many computer systems have been abandoned for new computer systems, mainly because of SPEED.
The ability to act faster than anyone else can be your greatest asset in business. Anyone that delivers faster than his competitors will enjoy more patronage. Brian Tracy said: “Time is the currency of the 21st century.” This is the “Microwave Oven” age, the “Fast food” age, when only those who deliver within given time frame will stand the test of time.
“But Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?” (Gen.27: 20).
Jacob brought what Isaac his father asked for before his brother Esau. He got the blessing Esau was entitled to, because he was faster. Many have lost a lot of business opportunities because they are too slow in their operations. Many customers have left some companies with the mind not to return, because of the late delivery of services and products.
Always work with the deadline of your clients in mind. When you always deliver on time, your customers will see you as someone reliable. Reliable people are valuable people, especially in the business world. If people can’t take you for your word, they won’t be able to depend on you; hence they might not hang around you for long, especially in service business, time frames matter. If you are working hard and not working smart, you might not be able to make maximum impact. If you can do the job quickly and well, you’ll enjoy high patronage.
“…Then Jesus said to him, “whatever you do, do quickly.” (John 13: 27).
You must learn to do whatever you do quickly and well.
Most clients are ready to pay more sometimes for speed and quality. Everyone in business must learn to combine quality and speed, if they want to be relevant in today’s business. To work and deliver within a short time frame is a plus in this “Jet Age.” Even in our offices, employers want to hire faster and smarter people.
There was a report in Success Magazine, a few years ago: 140 chief executive officers were given 20 qualities of an ideal employee, and asked to select the most important. Eighty-six percent of these senior executives selected two qualities as the most important qualities for career success. Firstly, is the ability to set priorities and to separate the relevant from the irrelevant. Secondly, is the ability to get the job done fast and to execute it quickly.
A business can die, if the operators are not meeting up with deadlines. Gradually, such business begins to lose patronage. People that are slow and sluggish sometimes lose their job, because they can’t catch up with expected pace. If you will learn how to deliver quickly and well, you will soon take over the market place. Jacob took over, because he could deliver so quickly and well, also because Isaac did not complain about the quality of the venison.
Front liners in the market place use statements as this in their adverts: “Give us a week and we’ll take off the weight,” “We deliver within 24 hours.” They use such statements because they know they are dealing with the most impatient generation in history. Why these front liners are few is because only two percent of the world population has a sense of urgency.
“I must work the work of Him that sent me while it is day. For night comes when no man can work.” (John 9: 4).
Even Jesus worked on earth with a sense of urgency. You need to join these two percent of the world population; they are the history-makers, the city-shakers and the pacesetters in our market place. I believe shortly we will begin to hear your name among those that are making things happen in the business world, as you put this tested and Word-based principles to work.
