Winning the heart of your employer
You need to win the favour of your superior, if you want to climb the ladder of success. The level of favour you enjoy from your employer will most often than not determine your level you work. Your ability to impress your superiors or employer can go a long way to affect your career.
“These sons of Jacob were very jealous of their brother Joseph, and they sold him to be a slave in Egypt. But God was with him and delivered him from his anguish. And God gave him favour before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. God also gave Joseph unusual wisdom, so that Pharaoh appointed him governor over all Egypt and put him in charge of all the affairs of the palace.” Act7: 9 10 (NLT)
Joseph’s promotion came as a result of the favour he enjoyed from the chief butler that made him recommend Joseph to Pharaoh. Jesus had 12 disciples (staff), but there were these three that enjoyed special privileges from Him. I want to expatiate in this chapter, what made Joseph and those three disciples win a special place in the heart of their Masters.
Some of the wisdom keys I will be sharing with you in this chapter may be familiar to you, but when practised, their impact on your career and business are extraordinary. Someone said, “Our minds often over-look information that is familiar.”
Work Diligently And Skilfully
Don’t be a lazy staff. You need to understand what is expected of you and have a sincere interest in your work. Truly competent and hardworking staff are always on the list of their employer’s favourites. A wise man said: “There is no future in any job, the future lies in the man who holds the job.” Your attitude to your work will determine your future on the job.
“The man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valour; and Solomon, seeing that the young man was industrious, made him the officer over all the labour force of the house of Joseph” 1Kings 11: 28.
When your employer discovers that you are doing your work well, you will win a special place in his/her heart. Be careful you are not into eye service, because it can’t take you far.
Be Well Behaved, Especially At Work
Character is a trigger to favour. You can’t win the favour of your superior(s) at work, if you are not well behaved. Be nice to your clients and other staff, because kindhearted people are ‘hot cakes’ in the labour market.
Avoid being arrogant. It was pride that demoted the devil from an archangel to a fallen angel. God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble (1Peter5:5,6).
Mind your language in the work place. If you have any complaint, sit down calmly with whoever is concerned and discuss the issue, in a way that you’ll be part of the solution, and not part of the problem.
Be careful you are not involved in gang-ups and gossips. People who are involved in things like these are never seen as part of the construction crew of a work place.
“Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels.” 2Tim.2: 23 (NIV).
Be Comfortable With Correction
If you learn to accept correction, your performance will improve, although it’s not easy. Be humble enough to embrace correction. See correction as an opportunity to improve the quality of your work, especially when it is coming from a more experienced staff or a client. There is a popular saying in the business world that, “If you are satisfied, tell others, but if you are not, tell us.”
“For whom the Lord loves He corrects…” Prov.3:12Those who resist correction are difficult to work with. They are too rigid to work with in this dynamic age.“Bondservants, be obedient to those who are your master according to the flesh, with fear and trembling in sincerity of heart, as to Christ; not with eye service, as men pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.” (Eph.6: 5, 6).
Make sure you are positioned in your workplace to be a ‘pillar’ and not a ‘caterpillar.’ When you are seen as a ‘plus’ and not as a ‘minus,’ you will win your superiors and employers’ favour.Whatever you do now is a seed, and don’t forget that “as long as the earth remains, seedtime and harvest will not cease.” (Gen.8: 22). As an employee, work like you will work if you are the employer. Serve your employer as unto the Lord, because God is not mocked, whatever a man sows, that he shall also reap. (Gal.6: 7).
“Moreover, it is required in stewards, that one be found faithful.” (1Cor.4: 2).
