Oba of Benin receives Danish Ambassador, calls for investment to curb human trafficking

Omo N’oba N’edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, Oba of Benin has called on Danish Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency, Torben Guttermann, to use his good offices to create policies to discourage human trafficking.

Oba Ewuare II, who made the call when the Ambassador paid him a courtesy visit in his Palace, said if there were no demand, there would be no supply, noting that human trafficking and illegal migration has become a global phenomenon, which must be tackled through concerted efforts.

The Oba solicited support of Danish government in the area of investment, especially agriculture to productively engage youths and discourage them from embarking on dangerous journey through the desert or sea.

The Benin monarch explained that the Palace has offered massive land to Danish investors to establish one of the largest poultries in Africa, and called on the Ambassador to prevail on them to ensure its realisation.

The Danish Ambassador said he was in Benin for the premiere of a movie on human trafficking, put together by NAPTIP and other NGOs, which is being supported by Danish government.

He said the movie is for community outreach in Nigeria on the dangers young men and women face in the desert and Mediterranean Sea while being trafficked out of Nigeria; and that many have died in the process of being trafficked between Nigeria and Europe.

The Ambassador commended the Oba for the purposeful leadership he is providing in Benin Kingdom, which has brought tremendous peace, progress and development there.

He promised to initiate some agricultural projects in Edo State that would meaningfully engage youths.

Oba Ewuare II Charges Commissioner Kokumo To Tackle Misuse Of Police In Arrest Of Citizens
His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, Oba of Benin has urged the new Police Commissioner to Edo State, Mr. Johnson Babatunde Kokumo, to tackle misuse of police personnel by some individuals to arrest and intimidate other citizens.

The monarch said this in his Palace, when the Commissioner of Police paid him a courtesy visit. He also drew the Commissioner’s attention to menace of herdsmen in the state, with the view of tackling it.

The Oba informed Commissioner Kokumo about existence of the Private Property Protection Committee, which was established to help enforce ban on activities of the state’s Community Development Association (CDA) and solicited Police’ assistance in ensuring that the committee succeeds in its duties.

The Oba noted that crime and insecurity scare away investors, but with peace and a crime-free society, investors would be encouraged to invest in the state.

He told the Commissioner of Police that a meeting of heads of security agents in the state would soon be convened to discuss possible way of tackling various security challenges.

While welcoming the new commissioner to Edo State, Oba Ewuare II assured him of Palace cooperation in ensuring that he succeeds in actualising his vision and mission for Edo State and citizens.

Earlier, Mr. Kokumo explained that he was in the Palace to introduce himself and solicit for royal blessings to enable him and his men succeed in combating crime in the state.

Kokumo assured that under his leadership, Edo people would sleep with their two eyes closed. He solicited for useful information from the public that could lead to arrest of criminals.

While explaining that securing release of suspects from Police custody is free, the commissioner vowed to cleanse the state Police of corruption. He noted that illegal arrest of members of public would not be tolerated under his leadership.
