Commission, EEF to train 300 teachers in
United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has adopted Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) to scale up teaching of pupils in Borno State. According to the Fund, TaRL employs Words Formation (WoF) and the Oral Additional Charts (OAC) for the children to write sentences, addition and multiplication of numbers in various classes.
Unveiling the TaRL, yesterday, in Maiduguri, to mark International Day of Education (IDE) at the Yerwa and Lamsula Primary Schools, the State’s Coordinator, Umar Lawan, disclosed: “The adoption of teaching at the right level for children ensures quick learning in literacy and numeracy in Hausa and Kanuri.”
He noted that most of the pupils could not write and speak in English before adopting TaRL by UNICEF in the 25 target schools.
ALSO, the North East Development Commission (NEDC), in partnership with Limo Holdings Nigeria Limited, is to train 300 teachers in the state.
The two-week capacity building workshop is for teachers in the various basic schools in the state. Declaring the training sessions open, yesterday, in Maiduguri, NEDC Managing Director, Mohammed Alkali, represented by Sa’adatu Shehu, disclosed: “The Education Endowment Fund (EEF) was to address the poor human development indices and the rising rates of illiteracy and poverty in the North East.”
According to her, the 2018 United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Human Development Report also indicated that the region lags behind in both capital and human resources.
“We are to harness and develop sufficient human resources, including the training of teachers in their various capacities to teach in schools,” she said.
