Don urges administrators to reorganise efforts in national interest

Vice Chancellor, Caleb University, Prof. Ayandiji Aina, has decried the state of administration in Nigeria, saying the system is obsolete and in need of urgent attention

The Don noted that administration plays a critical role in the economy of any country, adding that this is why most countries of the world are constantly realigning and reviewing their actions and policies to find how best to serve defined national interests.

He emphasised the need for Nigerian administrators to rejig their policies and have a different outlook for the good of the citizenry.

Aina spoke at the Chartered Institute of Administration (CIA) Annual General Meeting and induction of new members.

He said: “an administrator needs to engage in strategic management. Strategic Management entails continuous planning, monitoring, analysis and all that is necessary for an organisation to meet its short term and long-term goals and objectives.”

In his address, President and Chairman of Council, Prof. George Chima, warned members against evading tax payment, saying such practice might bring to ridicule the values of the body.

“Tax remission falls within the purview of decent professional ethics, and is morally imperative that members of the institute do not go against the laws of the land.
“For the sustenance of one’s membership of the CIA, it is expected that members must perform certain fundamental duties and fulfill crucial obligations, which include to pay up all sums payable to the institute, such as membership subscription, dues and levies as and when they are due.”

Chima added, “You must avoid holding clandestine, nocturnal meetings aimed at plotting against the institute’s progress and/or embarrassing the governing council.

“You must avoid unguarded utterances and or offensive publications, which are prejudicial to the image and integrity of the institute, its key officers and bring them to disrepute, because the punishments for all these are enormous.”

Also, Registrar and Chief Executive, CIA, Akobundu Okonkwo, called on the Federal Government to integrate professional administration in all spheres of public and private institutions, saying that it would provide the necessary structural and functional backbone for best practices.

“Every organisation should have a properly structured administration department. These departments, be they public or private, must be headed by a chartered administrator duly qualified and authorised to practice such,” Okonkwo said.
