E-Terra Technologies seeks growth of SMEs

SMEs

The Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer of E-Terra Technologies Limited, Dr Ifeanyi Ochonogor, has insisted that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are critical to the growth of the nation’s economy.

To this end, he stated that some players could leverage on opportunities in the upstream of e-waste to generate revenue, and bridge the unemployment gap.

Speaking during Material Recovery and Recycling Facility tour by members of Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE), Lagos Chapter, and Rotary Club of Omole Ojodu, District 9110, in Lagos recently, he noted that some players can benefit from e-waste by collecting electronic scrap materials, recovery of electronic scrap, refurbishing of electronic scrap and environmental services.

With the theme: ‘Opportunities for SMEs in e-waste’, he added that the organisation has also established an NGO called: ‘E-waste Relief Foundation’ with the objective to create awareness of the problems of improper handling and disposal of e-waste. This is to develop Nigeria’s informal sector of e-waste management with trainings/workshops, and to include e-waste management into the national curriculum of institutions in Nigeria.

He said e-waste crises have been found to be much more hazardous, invidious and pervasive, adding that the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) stated that about 1.1 million tonnes of e-waste is generated in Nigeria annually.

Speaking, President, Rotary Club of Omole Ojodu, Opeyemi Obafemi, said private sector should be a major player in changing waste to wealth, adding that government policy is also crucial to the growth of SMEs in Nigeria.

Similarly, Chairman (NIIE) Lagos chapter, Engr. Abiola Kosegbe stated that E-Terra is managing waste in a manner that is certified by international regulatory bodies.

Specifically, she added that e-waste is the most toxic waste that should be looked into.

She added that entrepreneurs could leverage on opportunities in the waste management cycle like treatment and processing among others.
