Institute seeks improved accountability in public sector

The Delta State chapter of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) has sought improved accountability in the public sector. In a communiqué issued at the end of its 2017 annual lecture held in Asaba, the state CIPM said that: “accountability must be encouraged in the public sector,” adding that people must be accountable, answerable, responsible and trust worthy.

“If we want to drive performance in the public sector, we must keep up with the staff, we must not lose sight of where we are heading and we must get our house in order,” it said.

It added that “issues of performance must start with us, change is necessary in the public service and we must be ready for change. The communiqué signed by the state Chairman of the CIPM, Barry Pere-Gbe said that to make things work in the public sector, performance must be pushed, pulled or lifted, adding that people should be deployed to areas of need to achieve result.

Meanwhile, the Special Adviser to the Delta State Governor on Rural Development and Peace Building, Edwin Uzor has identified a strong link between economic development and peace.

He noted that lasting peace was only achievable in a situation where people have fair opportunities for sustainable livelihood, accumulation of assets, general wellbeing, justice and security.

Uzor, who spoke to journalists yesterday in Asaba on the need for peace, added that even with all opportunities available, maintained that peace could only be consummated in the context of good governance and urged those pursuing economic development in conflict prone areas in the state including government business concerns, local and international organisations to ensure that their policies and programmes contribute to development and peace building.
